What is the Japan Digital Nomad Visa?
The Japan Digital Nomad Visa is a new opportunity for remote workers to live and work in Japan legally for up to six months. Whether you're a high-earning freelancer or employed remotely, this visa lets you experience daily life in Japan, far beyond what a tourist visa allows.
But how to apply for the Japan Digital Nomad Visa isn't always clear. The official requirements and rules can be vague, and Reddit threads often leave you with more confusion than answers.
I put together a step-by-step Visa Guide based on my own successful application and the many back-and-forths I had with Japanese immigration to get clear answers. After living in Tokyo for six months as a digital nomad, I also created a Tokyo Digital Nomad Guide with everything I wish I'd known: how to find short-term housing, the best neighborhoods, coworking spots, and tips for everyday life.
Get the guides bundle and start your journey as a digital nomad in Japan without the guesswork.

Frequently asked questions
Why not just google the information?
While it's true that some info is available online, official documentation for Japan's Digital Nomad Visa is vague, sparse, and often ambiguous. Reddit threads and forums are full of conflicting advice and more questions than answers.
I've personally gone through the process, had multiple direct exchanges with Japanese immigration, and created this guide to give you clear, practical steps that work, without the hours of second-guessing and multiple failed attempts of phone calls with Japanese immigration authorities at 3 in the morning.
While the Digital Nomad Visa is new, navigating daily life in Japan as a remote worker comes with unique challenges, especially in a city like Tokyo. From finding short-term housing that doesn't require a local guarantor, to choosing neighborhoods with good coworking spots and international communities, the usual expat advice doesn't always apply. This guide was built specifically with digital nomads in mind, people who need flexibility, fast setups, and a smooth landing. I've packed in everything I wish I had known on day one.
Why not just use a tourist visa?
Using a tourist visa to live and work remotely in Japan falls into a legal gray area. Tourist visas are intended for sightseeing and short visits, not for remote work. While many digital nomads have done it in the past, it's technically not permitted under immigration rules.
On top of that, most nationalities can only stay for up to 90 days on a tourist visa, which means you'd need to leave the country and re-enter just to extend your stay, something Japan strictly monitors. The Digital Nomad Visa, on the other hand, gives you a legal, six-month stay specifically designed for remote workers.
Can the Japan Digital Nomad Visa be extended?
Currently, the visa is not renewable. Once your 6-month stay is up, you'll need to leave the country and wait 6 months before reapplying. However, this could change in the future, so it's worth keeping an eye on updates from Japan's immigration authorities.
Can I live in other cities like Osaka or Kyoto?
Yes! The Japan Digital Nomad Visa allows you to live (and travel) anywhere in the country. That said, I recommend starting in Tokyo. It has the largest international community, all sorts of events, great infrastructure, and easiest access to support if you don't speak Japanese.
Do I need to speak Japanese to live in Japan as a digital nomad?
Not necessarily. In places like Tokyo, many locals speak some English, and most digital nomads can get by with translation apps. That said, learning some basic Japanese will definitely improve your experience and open more doors, especially when exploring beyond major cities.
About Me

I'm a software developer with 10+ years of experience who's lived in Costa Rica, Germany, and now Japan. After a couple of trips to Japan in 2024, I knew I had to spend more time there.
When Japan launched its Digital Nomad Visa, I jumped at the chance, and became one of the first people in Germany to be approved. I spent six months living and working remotely in Tokyo, learning the ins and outs of the visa, and everyday life in the city.
As a Japan digital nomad myself, I've helped fellow remote workers navigate everything from the Japan digital nomad visa process to finding short-term housing in Tokyo, choosing the right neighborhoods, and discovering local gems.

I asked Christian a bunch of questions, and he graciously provided tons of helpful details on several topics. Thanks to him, we now have a clear roadmap for making our dream of living in Japan a reality when the time comes."
